I think that one of the reasons that I am a writer is that it gives me a reason to read up on anything and everything, and conversely, a tangible use for any and possibly every piece of knowledge that I come across. Thus far, in the name of fic, I have managed to read up on: the climate and geography of Iran, ancient Persian history, qanats, apple trees, orange trees, and Arabic food. Oh, and since Joann's doing a project, I'm also reading up on Chinese folk tales. (Everyone keeps dying in them. And then they get turned into bamboo.) I also did some reading on the Mayans, but I haven't found an outlet for that area of research yet.
I suppose I should actually get back to work writing. I've tentatively identified the source of inspiration for Sailand as Persia, possibly Arabia, contrasted with the relatively European Astaria (from the style of their weaponry and the church that Cooro grew up in). Still, I'd like to look into clothing styles from the Middle East. Everything is just so fascinating ... besides, if I ever get back to Arslan fic, I can use all of the Persia stuff.

I just realized that for all of that (which I mostly wrote during chemistry class), I did not actually yet USE any of the painstakingly researched and crafted details I went to great lengths to obtain over the past few weeks. wtf, brain.
Oh, well. Next up: Nana, breakfast, spring plans. (It's late fall, early winter. I need to mention that and the time elapsed since divergence from the manga - did I mention this is AU? It's AU. There.)

My Disgaea party. ( Read more... ) I apparently have some serious leveling to do with the party as a whole. I cut through one story battle by tossing a Damage 20% Geo Symbol onto the color of panels that the enemy was standing on and waiting five turns, then went to see how bad the next battle was and promptly got chewed up. I won (two good spell casters who can use Mega Ice on a map of fire enemies? we totally won) but a bunch of units kicked the bucket. The next map is full of ice enemies, so we could actually repeat tactics (I have, in fact, four spell casters at my disposal in that case), but that wouldn't do much about the fact that we don't have the hit points to withstand a frontal assault.

Mild-tempered? They've never met Princess.

So, well, it probably took me over eight hours over several days, but that would be because I fell asleep three times (that I can remember) and gave up completely once, but my computer is now running The Sims 2 with all expansion packs, including Apartment Life, despite AL blowing up twice during installation and wigging out something (probably some obscure compatibility with video drivers, as Mr. Shiny is a laptop and video game designers do not test for laptop video driver compatibility - I'm going to assume it's because there is so much variability) badly enough to kill Sims even after I had uninstalled AL. (This was deeply weird and frustrating. I never actually did anything to fix it - I just decided to give running the game another go 24 hours later, and boom. It ran.) I'm not supposed to be able to run it, because I have Vista and therefore I am supposed to have a 2.4 GHz processor or something (which I don't, it's 1.67), but other than occasional (and understandable, have you SEEN some of the new animations?) lag, the game is running. (I have no reflections and no shadows, but I'm not one to quibble about the details as long as the game runs.) My sims have spiral staircases and magic. I don't really know why they put magic in the apartment expansion, but I don't question good things - I didn't think they would do magic at all in Sims 2, since they seemed so focused on making things more realistic.
Anyway, I have 45 minutes before I have to hop in the shower to go to school (OMG I'm going back to school!), so I'm off to see if you can make teen sims into witches.

PRETTY!
This is essentially an early combined birthday and New Year's gift to myself - I upgraded to a PSP slim. A blue one, in honor of Chapter 1 Ramza's blue tunic (alas, it is not the same shade of blue, but at least it is still blue). So far, I have managed to insert the battery, insert the memory card, insert the UMD, charge the battery, connect to the internet successfully (Network Settings and from there it's just like setting up a computer on a wireless network), and check my email. I'm going to give loading music onto the memory stick another try, later.
I mean, okaie, so I didn't need to upgrade to do all that stuff. But my old PSP had a nasty gouge on the back and minor scratch on the front, the lighter model is a nice gift to myself because I always end up smacking myself in the face with whatever handheld console I'm using, and there are things you can do with a PSP-2001 that you can't do with one of the older models. And I'm aware that I'm being more than a little unreasonable about the whole thing, but it's making me ridiculously happy.

Betadine totally, completely, and utterly rules. My bunny's incision is not infected, yay! (He was neutered last Wednesday.)

Apparently, I did start the FF7/FF8 KH-esque crossover from hell. And forgot about it.
Note: This will probably be massively rewritten at some point.

Title: +Anima (plus Anima) Format: manga Favorite Character: Husky
Volume 8 is rated Teen (13+), probably due to the harem full of concubines, the discussion of slavery, and the implication of attempted murder. And yet there's no swearing, no violent on-screen deaths (there were some deaths, but they happened in the past and none were gruesomely depicted), not even the ultra-heavy angst that's been hitting the shelves lately. There aren't even any relationships because three of the main characters are under the age of twelve (and the fourth is, um, not mentally together enough to actively pursue one anyway).
And if that hasn't thrown you for enough of a loop, while it's cute and fluffy, it isn't completely brainless. This is not your typical High School Pointless Romance type fluff; this is an upbeat, happy story about a bunch of kids who have special powers because they almost died and therefore have to face persecution from the rest of the populace. Yes, Cooro is eleven and the biggest thought in his brain is where he can find another apple orchard. But Sailand enslaves +Anima outright, the Astorian government controls their country's supply of iron ore - it is far from a perfect world. It's still a beautifully rich world with a wonderfully told storyline. I read this when I need something comforting - not because it's improbably heaven-like, but because it contains a force of optimism through sheer belief (mainly in the form of Cooro) that never fails to lift my spirits.

So a day short of a week after my latest bout of work-related stress-induced gastrointestinal distress, I've already got another one. It's back to crackers and jello. I bought some, what's it called, bismuth subsalicylate, so perhaps this won't mean I'm racing to the toilet every couple of hours. I am going to try and stay until they find a replacement, but I am quitting this job.

There are two one-on-one battles in Valhalla Knights. Whenever you win one, you are declared a worthy opponent; one of the guys you defeat says he'll be honored to join your party, the other says that you fought with honor.
I blinded both guys and cast spells like mad from a safe distance (read: all the way across the fighting arena, are you kidding me? Those guys pack a PUNCH). It never fails to amuse me.

Some days I get the feeling that I have got to be the only one who names tags as if they were filenames or variables.
Anyway, I should be starting school on Monday. --insert minor freakout here--
However, Zack is now level 35, I have a mastered Hell Thundaga, I'm leveling up a Graviga and a Drainra, and I have a fully mastered Steal that I keep equipped so that I can rob monsters blind of their items. Most of it is junk, but I can fuse items into my materia now, so I'm hoping to collect enough stuff to eventually create disgustingly powerful materia (as if the HP Up+ with +170% HP wasn't bad enough). I have yet to summon Mog, sadly.
I'm eating a very strange food that is composed of white, fluffy, sweet filaments bundled into tiny logs. It's probably Chinese or Taiwanese in origin. The sugar rush is incredibly steep.

I made soup today! (It never fails to amaze me how little resemblance the food I cook has to any named dish any other person in the world has ever put together. I based this soup off of Chinese hot and sour soup, but the ingredient list took a left turn at Albuquerque and didn't look back.)
I also returned to Crisis Core. I have an HP Up+ (HP +70%) materia and a level 1 Curaga. I still haven't figured out how to get Hell Thundaga (which I really want because not only does it cause status ailments, if I equip a Status Ward materia, it'll protect me from the same ailments it inflicts), but given the rate at which regular Thundaga burns through my MP supply, this is probably a good thing for now. Basically, I win tough fights by flanking until I have enough space to get away with unleashing a couple of Thundagas. Zack routinely inflicts 4000 points of damage per Thundaga, while his stupid little sword only tops 1000 if he's doing a critical hit (a hit from behind, which I'm usually not dextrous enough to pull off). Plus, using said sword means he has to be closer to the enemy, which in turn means that they're close enough to hit him - and he doesn't have that many hit points, even with the fancy HP Up+ materia. I am possibly attempting missions that are too hard for me at the current stage of the game.

I got Persona 3!
... and I answered the second question in class wrong (so I took Japanese history! But I don't remember when the Jomon period was or how advanced their houses were!) so I'm going to have to restart. Possibly from the beginning since I'm not sure if I should really attempt the game on Normal (I'm pretty good tactically, but only after I've played the game for about a hundred hours). Besides, it made me present my character's name in Japanese style, so I'm not entirely positive I really want to be named Beoruv Moguri (I have no idea how Beoulve is romanized in the original FFT game). Also, I've pretty much been answering all questions at random, which is probably making the other characters think that my character is insane.
I also spent almost the entire time laughing at the little animations. I'm sorry, Atlus. I know you've got this really great game that has so many disturbing themes that it's rated M. But you made everyone chibi and they get sweatdrops and little exclamation points and they're so dang cute! KAWAII!

Anyway, this was supposed to be a post about simmy stuff, except I went to all the trouble of building a house on stilts only to realize AFTERWARD that sims aren't able to walk underneath second-story deck foundations, even though you can place objects there.
