Tonight, a rabbit is dying.

He was dumped in a relative's backyard when his owners no longer wanted him. We went today to set out a trap in the hopes of catching him, baited with a variety of bunny delicacies.

A hawk tried to carry him off right in front of us. After a struggle, he escaped, but we were unable to catch him and could not find where he ran to hide.

This cute little lionhead is now dying, wedged under a porch or a bush somewhere, licking his wounds. If some other predator, attracted by the scent of blood, does not take him, the wounds from the hawk's talons will abscess, and the infection will kill him anyway.

=(

Is it bad that I hope he goes quickly, if you can't find him again? I hate the thought of him suffering like that.

Poor baby...

He was sighted two days later, and bunny lady has been trying to catch him for the last three days. Today I bought a net and various sweets for bait (among them a can of cherry pie filling, which I am now finishing off because I'm too tired for dinner) and spent six hours with her in the attempt. I almost had him twice. Last night, a raccoon was also sighted - and there's a stray cat in the area, too.

I'd much rather a quick death than suffering, myself. I know it sounds callous, but at this point it's not even just the bunny at stake. The suspense has already wrecked my sleep for the past week. Bunny lady is sick again (it's still chilly at night) and if she winds up with pneumonia again, well. It will negatively impact the health of her foster rabbits, the entire operation will grind to a halt, and who knows what will happen.

She did call animal control, but they need direct permission from the homeowner, and he didn't get in touch with them in time for them to come today - I am hoping that if the bunny survives until Monday, they'll take it over. It's such a big if, though. I did not see visible wounds, but I did see his ribs sticking out. He must be hungry, but the treats don't appeal to him. He's too wily and fast to catch without more people.
