I ... somehow picked up a habit of gleefully slaughtering every Tonberry I encountered. I'm not sure how, but I suspect that everyone warning me about them caused me to launch the fiercest attacks possible as soon as I saw one, meaning that they actually didn't get a chance to completely decimate my party. And so I got to know Tonberries as tough opponents with lots of HP, but essentially harmless ones because I knew I could take them down.

Same here. Tonberry = Bring out the big guns.

Tonberries in FFTA2 only seem to be dangerous if they get right next to a unit, so as long as you can hurt them badly from a distance, you're okay. Ranged Ultima Charge works wonders on them.

Ahh, the joys of making full use of those units you spent forever and a day training up.

There are days when I wish that FFT had Tonberries. Beowulf has a Spellblade called Vengeance, which if I am reading correctly, is more or less equivalent to Everyone's Grudge, but it's really just not the same. Also, the way I use Beowulf, he doesn't take enough damage for it to be useful. Since he's more durable as well as faster than a mystic, I have him running around disabling everyone. Quite useful when I'm trying to steal.

Well, yeah. ^^

I tend to be leery of skills that depend on the skill-user taking lots of damage. It's one reason I never used Hexers in Etrian Odyssey 1, because their best skill relies on them having very low HP, and Hexers aren't exactly durable. From what I gather, this has been fixed somewhat in EO2.

(Disgaea lets you get around this - sort of - if you level the character up a LOT and then give them a weight. Works best for Samurai and Kunoichi (and possibly Ninjas?), though, because they get special skills when their HP is critical. I'm not sure about other classes.)

Disabling an enemy so you can rob them blind, on the other hand? Oh, yeah. *evil grin*

Well, the other problem is that Vengeance costs something like 600 JP, and believe me, I always have something better to do with my JP. Drain/drain MP, for instance.

^~v Is there any other reason to be disabling your opponents?

No?

Well, I suppose you might want to disable your opponent if they had some sort of skill you didn't want them to use. Otherwise, no.

That's a lot of JP for something that relies on the unit in question being in poor health.

Heh. Did you take a look at the requirements for Dark Knight? A lot of JP for something that puts you into poor health. (I'm still working on training up a few - I've actually spent so long on it that I'm not exactly sure which units it was again.)

Touche. =D

On the other hand, do the skills themselves put you in poor health, or are they only useful if you're already in poor health?

I have to admit that I almost never used Cecil's Darkness skill before I turned him into a Paladin. Tried it once or twice, but... meh. All it does in FFIV is increase Cecil's damage output in exchange for a percentage of his HP, and I figured it was simpler for him to just hit things.

If I'm reading it right, the Dark Knight does have a drain HP ability, which would make it insanely invaluable in any circumstance, if you could only get one. The other skill drains a percentage of your max HP to deal out damage, which is how they worked in FFX-2. Dark Knights were invaluable in that game because they were able to damage any enemy - it didn't matter what they were immune to or how high their evade rate was. That's part of why I want to get one - traditional units often have to circle around to the back to get a decent chance of their attacks connecting, once you get up around level 25 or so (Husky's party is currently around 37). A heavily armored unit who has a ranged attack that has a very high chance of connecting is hugely valuable in FFT, and there were only two in the original PSX version - Agrias and Orlandeau. I'm betting that I can make up for the HP loss with Lifefont (regain HP upon moving), Regen (from the Chantages that I poached), and Auto-Potion (I don't think it will trigger upon use of the Darkness skill, but it would trigger if the Dark Knight were hit by anything else) or Critical: Recover HP. I've also got four or five males who know Life's Anthem. None of these are particularly impressive by themselves, but if I stack two or three HP-regaining strategies on a single unit, that unit does not die unless I'm a complete idiot, forget what level she is, and cast Holy on her with arithmetic skill. (Sorry, Agrias.)

Of course, in a game that doesn't give you as many options for configuring your party and doesn't routinely throw things at you that can easily crush you under their feet, I agree, Darkness is pretty silly. Too much risk and too little gain.

Yeah, ranged attacks are good. Cecil doesn't have one; I could have sworn he had one in FFIV Advance, but not here. FFT Dark Knights sound a lot more useful.

Of course, it's something of a moot point now that Cecil's a Paladin. ^^ But still...
