Hysterically inappropriate textbook paragraph.
"Rabbits make good pets. They are mild-tempered, seldom bite, and can be housetrained."

Mild-tempered? They've never met Princess.

So... they've never heard of breed temperaments? Or, for that matter, rabbit breeds?

Well, to be fair, this was part of about half a page on rabbits in my vet tech textbook. (I think they were sandwiched between mice and ferrets.) But, well. Clearly whoever wrote this has never dealt with rabbits outside of a clinic or a lab. Not that the book is about rabbits. I just wish they'd bothered to be a tiny bit more knowledgeable. I mean, yes, Princess is a lot less high strung than, say, Hazel. But all that really means is that she'll be totally calm while she points out (with her teeth) that I'm not supposed to be associating with other rabbits.

They probably should have put a weasel word in there or something: "...generally make good pets", "...frequently make good pets" etc..

Incidentally, I counted the rabbit books at Barnes and Noble today. I found five, one of which was Rabbits for Dummies (the others were Barron's books or part of some other series, so I'm guessing they were also general overviews - thin, too). Oddly, there's about half a shelf's worth of books on parrots.

Mmm. Even the House Rabbit Handbook is pretty thin (they print small, though, and they don't use six tons of glossy photos). The biggest book I've seen is my textbook on rabbit medicine (there is a similarly thick one that I don't have yet, but it also covers ferrets and other exotics, so I'm guessing not all of that is rabbit-related). My school library actually does have a pretty thick one from the early 1980s on raising rabbits for profit, which I find a bit weird. I'm not sure if I should read it or not; for one thing, it's clearly out of date, and while it never hurts to know what people are thinking, if they're raising them for sale, they won't bring them to a vet. For now, I'm ignoring it in favor of reading about the Mayans and the Persians. (Guess who just found out that students can check out 10 books at a time? :D)

I'll have to take a closer look at the rabbit books next time I go in, then. They're scattered amongst the rodent-type books and the fish books, so they're easy to miss.

I miss school libraries... =(

Yeah, the book on raising rabbits for profit seems like a weird selection for the library, especially given how old it is.
