Just got FFT!
So far:

  1. It's gorgeous.
  2. Message text has speeded up.
  3. Everything sounds kind of funny, but it looks like the help info is better translated.
  4. I still can't have more than 16 saved games per memory stick - wtf?
  5. Gained JP up - now JP Boost - now requires 250 JP! Did it before? This can't be my imagination.
  6. You get 24 units - I think. I am reasonably certain that this is more than you used to get.

Way too happy. Gonna stay up half the night!

The old strategy guide I have (bought back before I could afford a Playstation) says Gained JP Up indeed costs 250 JP.

I still don't get the Saved Game limitation. I really want to know how that's coded...

How is it so far?

Hmm, I shall have to check. Perhaps my memory is indeed faulty.

Job class requirements have definitely changed, as have when items are for sale. It is forcing me to recalibrate strategies: I can no longer depend on upper class mages in the early game, while chemists have become more valuable during that time.

At the moment, I have one FF8 party, which is doing fairly well for not having gotten further than the middle of Chapter 1. I had started a Ramza Mog party (based on the character from the Mog-Taurus dream), but I had a few too many units with low Faith and not enough who were compatible with a Libra, so I shall have to restart that party. Low Faith is useful later in the game, when you may not have the luxury of waiting until all of your units are out of range of whatever massive damage spell you're about to let off, but it's a pain in the neck if you're depending on a white mage for healing in Chapter 1 (because you can't afford enough potions to heal everybody, because you spent all your gil hiring new units so that you could rename them). Well, I also fell asleep in the middle of a random battle and woke up to find half my party dead - I'm still not sure what went wrong, but it just gives me bad vibes, so it's time to restart.

Or the guide is wrong. I never got to play FFT, so I don't know.

*wince* Yeah, I think I'd restart after that, too.

Do you get any units at the game's beginning, or do you have to hire them all?

I just figured out one thing about the saved games - they save all sixteen games in a bundle on the memory stick. Very odd - it means you have to delete games manually from within the game, or delete all of them at once using the PSP.

When you start, you get yourself, with a zodiac sign of your choice and starting Bravery and Faith of 70 (quite good, but, note, balanced), plus six randomly-generated units. Their zodiac signs typically aren't ones that clash with yours, and usually a few of them will be compatible. You get three males and three females (two squires and one chemist each, although this is something of a moot point as they are the two basic classes); their starting Bravery and Faith range from approximately 45 to 74. You can adjust stats with the Orator class, although this takes time (to train one in the first place) and determination (to continually attempt the Speechcraft skills as they have a low success rate, and you can only bump them up one point at a time).

I typically purge most if not all of the six random units so that I can name new ones in their place (I just don't like playing with a black wizard named Fred - I can't take myself seriously). It's a pain in the freaking neck because I have to jam X and O through several rejects before I find a randomly-generated unit that I like. It's really not an efficient way to play the game, but I'm very anal retentive about my party. I've also found that it's easier to teach JP Boost to a newly-hired squire - new units come with some JP, while your starting units start with learned abilities such as Rush. Now, I almost never actually use Rush, so I'd rather save the 80 JP and put it towards JP Boost (which nets me more JP so that I can learn Rush anyway).

That's a weird save mechanism.

I was going to ask whether you could rename the units you got at the game's start, but since you've got other reasons to discard them, that's kind of moot. I see your point about the starting units not being malleable enough.

Fred the Black Wizard would probably fit better in one of the Disgaea games; they seem to take pride in their off-the-wall unit names (Deathsatan... Detective Foley... Mr. Kamikaze...). I'll admit I kind of like the idea of a black wizard named Fred, but then I also have this weird compulsion to rename Umaro "Bob" every time I play FFVI, so I've clearly got issues anyway.

Well, FFT's random names aren't usually that bad, but they would occasionally throw stuff that I just couldn't live with. (Case in point: Algo the Bull Demon, who advanced slowly upon my party - "Algo is coming!" "Something is coming? What?") You're allowed to rename monsters at will, but you can only name humans when you hire them. So, well, yes, there have been a couple times when I tossed a 71/74 unit (better stats than Ramza!) just because I didn't like the name. Besides, I have entirely too much fun recreating entire parties, complete with name and job filched from another game.

Umaro as Bob. The idea grows on me. I must admit that I renamed every member of FF6, with the exception of Mog and Shadow. Er, did I rename Umaro?

If you decide to be completely heartless, instead of dismissing the units you don't want, you can murder them in battle, hope they turn into crystals (well, reload if they drop a treasure chest instead), and have another unit inherit their abilities. I always feel guilty when I do that - it, ah, logs the number of units who have died permanently. Although it's a really good way to "cheat" in-game.

...I'm going to have "Something's Coming" from West Side Story stuck in my head for the rest of the night.

Why do they let you rename monsters, but not human units? That doesn't seem to follow.

I sometimes renamed the other FFVI characters (but not Mog, I don't think - I may have renamed Shadow "Clyde" at some point, and I know SOMEONE became "Mendou," though I can't remember who right now), but Umaro always became Bob. I have no idea why.

I'm not sure I could kill one of my own units, at least not on purpose. (There IS a subpoena for Friendly Fire in Disgaea 2, but I haven't gone for that one.) Really, I'm kind of a wuss that way.
