Sticky: vitamin K

BSAVA: "Vitamin K is synthesized by caecal bacteria, and, providing a rabbit is able to ingest its caecotrophs, deficiency is unlikely." [10]
Harcourt-Brown: "Vitamin K is produced by caecal microorganisms and is a constituent of caecotrophs. ... Deficiencies are unlikely to occur in pet rabbits." [36]

BSAVA adds that lucerne/alfalfa is a source of vitamin K.

Posted to save quotes for future use in letters to companies who produce rabbit food pellets, asking them to stop the use of synthetic vitamin K3, also known as menadione dimethylprimidinol sulfate, as research suggests that it may not be safe and veterianary medical textbooks suggest that rabbits obtain sufficient vitamin K from cecotrophy.

Smarter than I give him credit for :)

So Princess is busy washing her face, wash wash wash, wetting her paws and using them to clean her fur, busy busy busy, and Umaro oh so casually yawns, stretches, and stuffs his head right underneath her tongue. Now, for some reason, despite being something of a rabbit-cidal maniac (still), Princess likes to groom things (the floor; my sheets; any and all stuffed animals), so she automatically gives his head a few licks too. She stops after a second and resumes her own grooming. He waits a few minutes, then does it again, and she obliges - again.

I do know that he also grooms her - he's responsible for two temporary bald patches on the top of her head, where she can't reach.

Rabbit food concern

http://community.livejournal.com/rabbitowners/910529.html

The mentioned vitamin supplement (detailed here as being damaging to the liver) is in both Oxbow and Sweet Meadow timothy pellets. Oxbow at least has been cited as one of the best rabbit foods out there.

Guess the answer is to feed lots of hay, more veggies, and write to the feed companies asking them to remove it. I will also be running this by my vet the next time I see him.

An actual holiday wish list

For the past couple of weeks, I've seen wish lists floating in and out of my flist. Well, this is what I want for the winter holidays:

Please donate to a charity. Any one you like. Any amount you like. Dump change into a Salvation army box. I don't care.

Mine (the rabbit rescue I work for) takes PayPal donations. (Yeah, it's under my email. That's because I'm the only volunteer with enough time to do anything computer-wise.)

Classes are over, therefore I am attempting to make my flash drive into a bootable Linux flash drive.

Update: Apparently, it will not work because even though I am an administrator under Vista, I am encountering the problem that you experience if you are not an administrator under Vista. Time to ask my dad to buy me a drive with Linux already installed so I don't have to play games with my operating system.

there are times when I look back on what I did, and it scares me

I don't know if the pages are still up on my old Geocities account, but good grief. I have four separate HTML pages on The Lord of the Ring, complete with page citations or sources on three of them. (Hey, I was trying to make a point about accuracy.) This is what I used to do with my spare time?

So. Anyway. Given that only one or two people actually reads my IJ, how badly would people object to me re-posting stuff as a way of backing it up? Comment if you don't want your IJ flist spammed.

Oh, and before I forget yet again, happy belated birthday, randi! (If I ever manage an on-time birthday wish, the world will probably end.)

I think that one of the reasons that I am a writer is that it gives me a reason to read up on anything and everything, and conversely, a tangible use for any and possibly every piece of knowledge that I come across. Thus far, in the name of fic, I have managed to read up on: the climate and geography of Iran, ancient Persian history, qanats, apple trees, orange trees, and Arabic food. Oh, and since Joann's doing a project, I'm also reading up on Chinese folk tales. (Everyone keeps dying in them. And then they get turned into bamboo.) I also did some reading on the Mayans, but I haven't found an outlet for that area of research yet.

I suppose I should actually get back to work writing. I've tentatively identified the source of inspiration for Sailand as Persia, possibly Arabia, contrasted with the relatively European Astaria (from the style of their weaponry and the church that Cooro grew up in). Still, I'd like to look into clothing styles from the Middle East. Everything is just so fascinating ... besides, if I ever get back to Arslan fic, I can use all of the Persia stuff.
