There are two one-on-one battles in Valhalla Knights. Whenever you win one, you are declared a worthy opponent; one of the guys you defeat says he'll be honored to join your party, the other says that you fought with honor.

I blinded both guys and cast spells like mad from a safe distance (read: all the way across the fighting arena, are you kidding me? Those guys pack a PUNCH). It never fails to amuse me.

Well, on the plus side, I don't complain about lousy fics anymore. On the minus side, Sims 2 is eating my soul. It makes crunchy chewing noises.Read more... )

Okiae, absolute first thing you need to know about VK: It has a very annoying tendency to crash. ARRRRRGH I think I lost about an hour's worth of leveling. Time to go play Harvest Moon.

Things you should really know about Valhalla Knights:

  1. Blind affects spellcasting - if you've been blinded, you can't target anyone but yourself.

  2. Item drops do not depend on what monster was last killed, no matter what anybody said.

On the bright side, Ralgo and Retishi are shaping up to be decent units, now that I've spent some hours dumping points into their defensive stats.

I have also picked up a new party member, Greta, a female halfling samurai. She's quite strong, but like Retishi and Ralgo, she is very weak defensively. Mog's party doesn't really have room for units that have high offense and no defense. I'm not really sure what I'll do at this point, especially since I'd rather have Greta than Retishi. (But I put all that effort into causing Retishi to suck a teeny bit less!)

I've been playing Valhalla Knights, restarting frequently when I get fed up with my latest party. So far, I've learned that playing without a fighter in my party is almost always deadly. By that, I mean a unit who started as either a fighter or a thief, who is currently a fighter, and who has a shield and plenty of armor equipped. I disregard the strategy guide here and buy all the armor I can afford - it really reduces the amount of damage taken. Besides, there isn't really anything better you can do with all of your money. The inn is cheap and if I let anybody fall in battle, I don't make it back to the church for a resurrection anyway. There's not much point in hiring tons of units, and even that doesn't cost that much.

The interesting thing is that I'm slowly learning how to enter combat with my priest/mage and not get immediately clobbered. While I could cast spells, of course, a priest starts with no offensive magic and I always run out of MP before long. So I've found that I can flank the enemies, whack or stab them once or twice, then retreat - and if I do it correctly, I get my vulnerable spell user out of range of the counterattack.
